When is the best time to book your newborn session?

January 14, 2026

One of the most common questions I get from expectant mamas is when they should book their newborn photos. If you’re dreaming of relaxed, natural newborn photos captured in the comfort of your own home, here’s what I recommend!

01 | Why booking early matters

As an in-home newborn photographer, I take on a limited number of sessions each month. This allows me to stay flexible around babies arriving early or late, and ensures every family receives a beautifully personal experience. I always suggest the earlier the better when booking a newborn photographer. Typically most of my clients reach out between 12-20 weeks to secure their session date.

02 | How I typically schedule newborn sessions

When you book your newborn session, I schedule it in for 7–14 days after your due date. This gives us a window to aim for while still allowing plenty of flexibility, because babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule!

Once your baby arrives, I ask that you get in touch within the first 3 days. From there, we simply confirm that the session date and time still feels right for you and your baby, or make small adjustments if needed.

This approach allows me to work around babies who arrive early or later than expected, ensure you’re feeling ready rather than rushed and keep the experience calm, supportive and completely baby-led.

03 | What if I’ve already had my baby?

If you’ve found yourself here with a newborn already in your arms, please don’t panic.

I always recommend reaching out anyway. While I can’t guarantee availability last minute, I do my best to accommodate when I can, especially for in-home sessions where flexibility is key.

And if your baby is a little older, that’s okay too. Newborn photography isn’t about perfection it’s about connection, and that doesn’t disappear after the first two weeks.

04 | A gentle reminder

Those first days at home are so fleeting. The tiny fingers wrapped around yours, the way your baby fits perfectly into your chest, the quiet chaos of becoming a family.

Booking your newborn session early means you can be fully present when the time comes knowing those moments will be preserved for you to look back on for years to come.

If you’re expecting and would like to talk about booking your newborn session, I’d love to hear from you!
